This board is called the Minimal Fin Board.
It’s based on a finless board originally conceived by Terry Martin, later combined with a “minimal fin” concept developed by Jeff Quam.
 
At first, Terry’s finless board was tested by several local surfers. While Tyler Warren managed to ride it beautifully, most others found it a bit challenging.
To keep the unique feeling of a finless ride while improving control during slides and adding some drive, the minimal fin was born.
 
This board retains the smooth, glidey sensation of a finless board like an alaia, but with buoyancy closer to a standard surfboard—making it easier to paddle. Rather than spinning around, it’s focused on trimming and pure speed.
 
It’s an ideal entry point into the world of finless surfing. Beginners can experience the feeling without getting thrown off too easily, and skilled surfers will still find plenty of depth and challenge.
 
The pinched, unforgiving rails grip the wave hard—especially in hollow sections—generating impressive speed. Once you release the rail, the board slides freely like a finless, but the minimal fin helps prevent full spin-outs and keeps you in control.
 
Recommended for clean point breaks or punchy beach breaks. It works best in fast, hollow waves rather than slow, mushy ones.
