Here's where you can order your custom board.

Hot curls are a designed shape for big waves, used by surfers in the 1930s and 1940s. The classic hot curl, a transitional shape that connects the Alaia/Plank era and the single fin era, it is an innovative large wooden board that enhances the flow & trim of a surfboard predecessor to the myriad of shapes found today. Classic hot curls are boards on which Duke Kahanamoku and many other water men of the time rode. Hot curls that have survived from that era are often exhibited as vulnerable artifacts in surfing museums.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of single fins in the 1950s, hot curls remain forgotten by mainstream surfers and are largely limited to the history of surfing.

I often wondered about what Duke felt when he was surfing, how different did his legendary rides feel compared to what we feel on the waves today. I wonder how Duke would feel about the way we surf today and how would the Hot Curl have evolved, if surfers had not converted to finned surfboards, what style of surfing would we be seeing today?

In 2015, Jeff Quam gave me the opportunity to ride a Hot Curl (shaped by Martin Shapes). Riding that surfboard was a feeling I had never experienced, surfing on any other board. On the Hot Curl, you feel at unity with the wave. The board listens to the wave and finds the sweet spot this shape desires. It is a Zen-like experience where you have to clear your mind while you are on the wave; if you consciously try to affect the board, or if you are not mindful of the situation, the Hot Curl will Introduce you to the water in short order.

In the words of Mr. Terry Martin: The hot curl design knows naturally what to do, riders have to behave themselves. It is a way to ride the wave with your heart and soul.

In the words of a surfer, Gene "Surfing is a dance, the wave always leads" This is especially true with the hot curl design.
